Horizontal Rain

As I sit in the office studying for one of my last exams in sociology I am inspired by some thoughts. I haven't shared my thoughts for a long time.

I am reflecting on the experiences that I've had this past year, my last MC term, and what being with my team has brought me. I always knew that being on the MC would mean I get to meet new people and discover how life is seen from other perspectives other than my own. That prospect was one of the reasons why I ran for MC in the first place.

What I did not realise was the learning that I would also gain about myself. Who I am, my unique contribution as seen in the eyes of others. This is a bit like the Johari window I guess. So far in my life I have been with my few best friends whom I have grown and developed with, but as we grew together we couldn't really assess how that development has led to who we are today.

Last month my team made an observation about me: they noticed that I always mention "random" pieces of general knowledge during our conversations, whatever happens to come to my mind at the time. Instead of describing a hot water as warm and snuggly I talk about the energy efficiency and other odd facts about hot water bottles. I never realised I did that until that night... and it required reflection.

I now realise that I do this because my friends and I while growing up loved to share odd facts and make observations about the things that we learn about in the world around us. I knew that I did this but I did not realise that other people did not do this as much as we did! It became quite apparent that this has now become a part of my personality, that if I was in a circle of people I felt comforatable talking to, it was a part of me I would share with them.

This year I have not only learnt to be more assertive, I am also learning more about who I am as a person. Who is Amy? I may spend the rest of my life discovering this.

Who are you? That is also something I love discovering. The many facets of people - their contradictions and what drives them to do what they do. The world is such an interesting mix of things to see and facts to learn; it will never cease to facinate me.
